If you’ve never been kayaking you don’t know the fun you’re missing. It’s one of the most relaxing water sports available and yet it can give you a superb upper body workout if you want it to. Coastal kayaking is a different experience than paddling in the rivers, lakes and ponds. The environment of the salt marsh presents you with an experience that is sure to stimulate your senses and leave you in awe of nature.
The first time out it’s always a good idea to go on a guided tour where kayaks, PFDs and paddles are all provided. A trained kayaking guide that knows the area well will take you out on the water and usually there is a fee for this. It’s suitable for both adults and children. You don’t even have to know how to swim!
Every Monday from now through February 27 two hour guided tours of the salt marsh will be offered at Huntington Beach State Park. Tours are held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. This is an excellent opportunity for beginners to go out kayaking in a low key, stressfree environment.
To reserve a spot you should call Black River Outdoor Center at (843) 546-4840 by 4:00 pm Sunday prior to the event. Designed for ages 9 and up. Children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $40/ person.
Meet at the Gift Shop/Park Office, then we’ll drive to Oyster Landing. Please bring bottled water, wear sunscreen, and lace-up shoes or sandals (no flip flops) that can get wet and muddy. Dress according to weather conditions. It can get cold on the water if it’s windy.
